Floasis is a community collaboration bringing a welcomed respite of kindness, comfort, and lots of shade to the Black Rock Desert.
For over five years, together with a small team, I’ve worked to bring the Floasis Burning Man Camp to the desert. Managing a budget of roughly $40k, we organized food, water, and shelter for 60+ campers, as well as entertainment and offerings for tens of thousands of burners. My role has been to lead the logistics and build of the camp. This includes handling the design, transportation and assembly of infrastructure, as well as the construction of various art installations. Burning Man always serves as my creative outlet to build art and use my design skills in ways I’m unable to in the default world. Each year I take on more ambitious projects, starting with a massive 16ft sign for the camp. Hand cut letters, wheat paste wallpaper, and over 350 individually addressable LED pixels let everyone know exactly who we are.
With my brand design background, I ensure the branding for the camp is incorporated throughout all of the decor. I first developed a pattern to fit the moroccan lounge aesthetic and used this to screen print a metallic gold wallpaper for the sign platform.
The following year, I took it a step further and used this pattern to create a light installation that hung from an elevated ceiling section. Using four 2’x8’ acrylic panels, I laid black vinyl to create a sticker mask that was then backlit with LED strips to create a unique visual effect. It attached to a steel frame creating a wave like pattern over the dance floor.
Over time we have dialed in the decor, to bring a lush oasis to life in the desert. My house has become a procurement center for rugs, couches, pillows, and fake plants. Aiming to always keep the interior design consistent, I matched the colored carpets to patterned pillows, hanging drapes and tapestries . Gold coffee tables around daybeds, palm trees with winding vines, and moisturizing masks has made Floasis quite a luxurious experience.
